Sandringham Sports Academy Forum and Victorian Institute of Sport Tour

20130730-180429.jpg

Sandringham College will be establishing a sports enhancement program in 2014. The program will aim to develop students sporting and academic abilities through a curriculum focused on accelerated learning using the long term athlete development model.

A select group of students from the three sites got together today to participate in a student forum at the Beaumaris Campus. The forum enabled the students to voice their thoughts and ideas on the proposed program.

The afternoon involved a visit and tour of the Victorian Institute of Sport. Here they were taken on a tour of the institute by 5 time world champion aerial skier, Jacqui Cooper. Throughout the tour the students asked insightful questions about the role of the institute in supporting Victorian athletes to achieve success in sport and life.

Art students

The diverse cultural environment of the Senior Campus Visual Arts community provides students with a nurturing and open space to express their ideas about the world and their place in it. Freedom of expression and openness to difference in our community allows students to be themselves and to be comfortable in who they are as young adults.

Here are a few pics of our creative students at work which I think show this celebration of individuality.

Semester 1 Artworks

Once again we see an amazing array of artworks being created by the Year 11 and Year 12 Art students. Here are some cuts of work produced over the first semester for 2013. The students creativity and talent never ceases to amaze us over here at the art department. Keep up the great work guys!!!!

Redesigning a Product

Term 1 has been a whirlwind of design and redesign in the VCE Textiles room. Students have explored the Product Design Process, which is used in all Units of the study. Unit 1 focuses on Redesigning a product, to improve it through design. Students created a basic t-shirt using interlock and ribbing, sewing machines and over lockers. This basic design is now being redesigned to better suit their client – in this case themselves. One of my constraints on their design is the need for some form of embellishment, the unit descriptor also includes a constraint where the redesigned product should also be more sustainable.
Today we explored a range of potential embellishment techniques including: photo transfer, screen printing, batik, photo printing on fabric, machine embroidery, reverse appliqué, appliqué and beading to give them an understanding of some of the potential options.

Sandy Hospitality Students Kept Busy

Sandringham VET Hospitality students are able to cater in their very own Sandy’s Training Restaurant situated at the Senior Campus. The VET Hospitality class is made up of Year 10, 11 and 12 students. Throughout the year they have gained experience by working in a commercial kitchen at Holmesglen TAFE, through Industry experience and by catering for a range of functions. Their most recent function was to cater a two course meal for sixty Senior staff within one hour. The student’s worked efficiently and presented themselves in a highly professional manner. The teacher’s were very complimentary of the standard of food served. We look forward to preparing and serving lunch at our Training Restaurant over the next couple of months.
