This year students from Mentone Girls and Sandringham College came together at the Beaumaris Campus to create an Alliance of Excellence.
One of the classes was units 1 and 2, Product Design and Technology, Textiles. Amy Willett was the teacher, and her students have designed and made some amazing garments. Unit 2 gets students to work as a team to design and create a product or range of products. They are nearing completion and look fabulous.

The art and design graduate students are exhibiting a creative and diverse array of artworks at Without Pier Gallery from October 14 – 21. On display will be work produced in Art, Studio Arts Drawing/ Photography and Visual Communication and Design. The college embraces a vibrant visual arts community with over 150 students opting to study art/design related folio subjects in Year 12. The exhibition will showcase the talents of over 50 students studying across a range of disciplines including oil painting, mixed media, watercolour, drawing, digital and analog photography, computer aided design and product design, illustration, ceramics and sculpture. Many exhibiting students will be hoping to gain entry into art and design courses at University and Tafe when they graduate, with the goal of becoming qualified industry designers or professional artists in the future. You can see more of the students work on our online gallery.
Without Pier is a commercial gallery who has supported the college by showcasing the senior students work annually for the last 16 years. They provide a fantastic opportunity for the students to have their work hung in a professional space. The exhibition opens on Tuesday 15 October at 6pm.

Senior Campus Expo Night – Tuesday 13th August at 7.00pm
Art students
The diverse cultural environment of the Senior Campus Visual Arts community provides students with a nurturing and open space to express their ideas about the world and their place in it. Freedom of expression and openness to difference in our community allows students to be themselves and to be comfortable in who they are as young adults.
Here are a few pics of our creative students at work which I think show this celebration of individuality.

VET Acting – Guest Speaker – Damien Bodie
The VET Acting class were thrilled to have ex-student and “Winners & Losers” star Damien Bodie visit as a guest speaker today.
He was an inspirational speaker and gave great insight into the acting industry.
The class enjoyed hearing his stories and participating in some improvisational activities.
We are so proud of him and his achievements. We really appreciate him taking the time to visit us.
Redesigning a Product
Term 1 has been a whirlwind of design and redesign in the VCE Textiles room. Students have explored the Product Design Process, which is used in all Units of the study. Unit 1 focuses on Redesigning a product, to improve it through design. Students created a basic t-shirt using interlock and ribbing, sewing machines and over lockers. This basic design is now being redesigned to better suit their client – in this case themselves. One of my constraints on their design is the need for some form of embellishment, the unit descriptor also includes a constraint where the redesigned product should also be more sustainable.
Today we explored a range of potential embellishment techniques including: photo transfer, screen printing, batik, photo printing on fabric, machine embroidery, reverse appliqué, appliqué and beading to give them an understanding of some of the potential options.
We also farewell Mayu, one of our international students, she has worked hard to learn how to sew and complete her basic t-shirt.
